Today was a very fun day for all of us. We entered Avonlea village in the year 1908. We were there right when it opened, and were the first ones in, and who did we see sitting on the bench at the train station? Anne herself. Sitting waiting for Matthew to pick her up. We went over, and Anne introduced herself, and we got to see how in character she truly is. The girls introduced themselves and we got pictures taken.
The entire day there is planned for us with plays, musical performances, puppet shows, parades, fairs, etc. Plus inbetween it all there are other activities to attend (school, dress up, stores, etc).
Since the beginning of Summer vacation, the girls and I have been reading Anne of Green Gables. While it took longer than expected to read it, and we were less than half way through the book, we were far enough that they knew what was going on, and were able to sit through the plays and remember it from the book.
The music show was fantastic. One of the guys playing was Brendan Peters, Pei's best spoons player. And boy, did Kat's eyes go huge when he started playing his spoons. I can definitely see why he is called the best.
After lunch (from the Picnic Basket), there was a puppet show put on by 3 of the characters (Moody, Charlie and Glibert), plus the music guy / children's entertainer (Mike Pendergast). It was a great kid's show. It was way over the top, but all the kids love it, and it was so obvious that the characters love working with / entertaining the kids.
Mid-afternoon, there was a barn dance that the girls participated in, and then the parade. Ellie and Dany waved their flags in the parade. Kat was chosen to walk up front with Marilla. She was beaming!
There was a variety of other activities that you could do in between the scheduled events. The girls attended school with Miss Stacey. We can say that Dany's first day of school was in 1908. LOL The three boys (Charlie, Moody, and Gilbert) attended as well as Gertie Pye, and of course, stayed in character, so Charlie was acting out.
There was also a dress up store. The girls got to dress like the characters. If we were allowed to leave the store with Ellie dressed the way she was, I doubt we would have been able to bring her home with us - she was a little Anne. So our next mission is to find an Anne dress and an Anne hat (without the braids attached) for her. Kat and Dany had fun trying on various outfits - Kat being Diana, and Dany just picking the "pretty pink" stuff.
Late afternoon, we visited the Anne of Green Gables Chocolate store. Yum! And of course we had to indulge in a little bit of Cow's ice cream.
The final play was the school concert, where all the characters gathered and did various acts - including poetry, singing, dancing, playing instruments (or a combo of the above). It was just so fabulous seeing all of them perform and see how talented they truly are.
A long stop at the store (the inability for the girls to decide what they wanted made it very long), and then headed out.
We headed back to the boardwalk for supper. Pizza Delight and the Cow's ice cream.
Great day! :)
